WEN manufactures a drill press line that contains four bench-top models and a pair of floor-standing models. The 4212 sits next to the highest offering within the bench-top portion of the road. What differentiates this drill press from the 2 models below it’s a mechanically adjusted variable speed drive that controls a more powerful motor while still providing the power to accommodate stock up to 20” wide. Features – Wen 4212 Review
As expected from a drill press of this caliber, it has a variable speed control that can be calibrated to any speed between 530 – 3100 RPM. This “infinite” adjustment of speed and no restriction to a specific speed setting means that it is extremely versatile. This machine can easily adapt to both the fabric density and therefore the way you’re employed with a drill press.
The chuck capacity remains 1/2 inch which suggests that it allows drilling bit with a 1/2 inch shank. This is very convenient because many professional drill bits, either for wood or metal are 1/2 inch shanked.
The table size also gets a big boost in this drill press model offering a generous 8 x 7-2/3 inches of space. Do not get us wrong, this is not the largest work table out there and it simply cannot compare to the 14 x 14 Inches worktable of the WEN 4227, but it’s still an honest performer offering good maneuverability for general-purpose drilling
We just like the construction quality of this drill press. It is solidly built from metal. The base as well as the work table is made from cast-iron for stability and durability. They are also thick which helps diminish vibration, thus enabling more stable and accurate drilling. It is also easier to drill with this drill press, mostly due to the steadiness it provides.
The table is often tilted to perform angular drilling. You can tilt it to either the right or the left at a 45-degree angle. This brings a lot of versatility to the drilling process. What we like is that the simple making those adjustments. All it takes is simply unscrewing a knob to adjust the work table. It’s that easy! Besides, when adjustments have been made, you can lock the worktable in position for repetitive drilling.
Digital Readout: The digital readout gives you your speed in a clear and easy to read panel.
Laser: This model has on-board laser lights for more accurate and speedy drilling.
Depth Adjustment Gauge: The depth adjustment gauge allows you to position and locks your spindle in any position you want. Reading the depth setting is straightforward because of the depth gauge.
All in all, this is a very user-friendly model that offers a lot of bang for the buck. It is easy-to-use with almost no prior knowledge required. Adjusting the bit depth, changing the speed, and tilting the table are all child play.
Both of the WEN press drills are high powered power tools that are capable of doing pretty much any job that comes their way. Although the 4210 has much power and may handle most tasks, it’s the 4212 that’s the more powerful of the 2 models and may handle the most heavy-duty of tasks.
The motor on the 4212 is 4.2 amp so it gives it a foothold over the 4210. It can comfortably drill through more dense materials, like thick steel, with absolute ease. We do advise that when drilling through these sorts of materials that you simply use the acceptable drill bits.
